Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island Spots
Sand Island
The Stumps
First Street
Serigny Rd. and the Poles

Dauphin Island’s main spots have been around for years. This is a list of the most common spots on the island. Dauphin Island generally breaks best on a South or Southeast swell, or a good wind wave. On rare occasions, such as a tropical systems, the island will break on a Southwest swell. Generally, wind waves from the Southwest are choppy and disorganized. The reason for this being that the boot of Louisiana cuts off swell from the SW. The relatively shallow water between the boot of Louisiana and Dauphin Island further helps break up the swell.

The best conditions on Dauphin Island are usually found when the buoys report a solid swell wave, with very little wind wave. A swell wave with a period above 6 seconds is good for our area. A wind wave with a period above 5 seconds can also make for a fun day, but rides tend to be shorter.

As Of August 2003, The Town of Dauphin Island and the Property Owners Association have joined together in making it illegal to park anywhere west of the public parking area at the pier. The general public is not allowed to park anywhere on the west end of Dauphin Island. This "Privilege" is reserved for Property Owners only. You must have a valid POA sticker on your car to park on the west end of the island.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Orange Beach Spots
The Jetties
Terry's Cove

The Orange Beach area generally breaks best on a South or Southeast swell. Being further to the East than Dauphin Island, Orange Beach can also break decent on a Southwest swell or wind wave. Unlike Dauphin Island, this area can pick up decent waves from any size swell. The deeper water off of the coast contributes to better waves for the area.

Gulf Shores Spots
West Beach Pass
Sea n Suds

The Gulf Shores area breaks on the same type of swell as Orange Beach.Be aware that Gulf shores does have laws against surfing in the city limits.
